Functional Massage Therapy
Our approach to massage therapy isn’t just about relaxing tight muscles, it’s about understanding why they’re tight in the first place. With a foundation in biomechanics and physical therapy, and a natural gift for intuitive healing, every session is designed to address the source of your discomfort, not just the surface.
Functional massage: more than relaxation
When most people think about massage, they think about an hour on the table followed by a sense of temporary relief. Sonja’s approach to massage therapy is built on a fundamentally different premise. That the body’s patterns of tension, compensation, and pain are telling a story, and that a great massage therapist’s job is to listen to that story and respond to it.
Functional massage is grounded in the science of how the body moves. Sonja’s background in Movement and Sport Sciences and her years working alongside physical therapists gave her a rare depth of anatomical understanding. The result is therapeutic massage that addresses the root cause of your discomfort, not just its surface symptoms. Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing chronic tension, or simply carrying the weight of a demanding lifestyle, Sonja’s sessions are designed to meet your body where it is.
What to expect from your session
Assessment & Intention
There is an initial check-in at our Denver studio where Sonja asks about your current physical concerns, history of injury, and what you’re hoping to address. This isn’t filler, it’s the foundation of a session that actually works. Where are you holding tension? What hurts, and when? Have you had recent injuries or surgeries? This intake shapes everything that follows.
The Work
Based on your assessment, Sonja moves through the session using the techniques best suited to your body’s needs. A full body massage with Sonja might weave together Swedish strokes for circulation, deep tissue work for chronic tension, neuromuscular techniques for trigger points, and myofascial release for fascial restriction.
Guidance & Integration
After your session, Sonja takes time to share observations including what she noticed in your body, where patterns of holding were most pronounced, and what you can do in the days that follow to support your recovery. You’ll leave with a better understanding of your own body, not just a temporary sense of relief.
Massage therapy services
Functional Massage Therapy
Sonja’s signature bodywork approach that is grounded in biomechanics and physical therapy principles. This is the right choice when you have specific physical concerns: chronic tension, injury recovery, postural imbalances, or restricted range of motion. Prenatal and postnatal clients are also welcome as Sonja’s functional approach adapts to the unique needs of the body before and after birth, offering nurturing care during one of life’s most physically demanding transitions.
Deep Tissue & Neuromuscular Massage
For clients dealing with chronic pain, stubborn muscle knots, or patterns of tension that haven’t responded to lighter work, deep tissue and neuromuscular techniques are the next step. Deep tissue massage works into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Neuromuscular therapy identifies and deactivates specific trigger points contributing to pain.
Full Body Massage
A head-to-toe session that allows Sonja to work the whole body in sequence, identifying and addressing patterns that localized work would miss. Full body massage blends Swedish technique for overall circulation and relaxation with targeted deeper work wherever your body calls for it. Ideal for stress relief, general maintenance, and anyone new to working with Sonja.
Energy Healing Massage
This is the most integrative session that layers hands-on therapeutic bodywork with Reiki energy alignment and her natural intuitive gifts. The result is massage therapy that addresses not just what your muscles are doing, but what your nervous system and energy field are holding. For those ready to go even deeper, this session flows naturally into Sonja’s full intuitive healing massage work, where spirit guide connection and intuitive reading become central to the experience rather than complementary to it. If you’re curious about intuitive healing, but want to start with a massage framework, this is an ideal entry point.
Let Sonja help
Whether you’ve been dealing with the same shoulder knot for years, you’re an active Denverite recovering from a tough training block, or you just feel like your body needs a serious reset, you’re in the right place.
Before Sonja ever picked up energy work, she built her skills in the physical world which gave her a rigorous framework for understanding how the body functions. Her work in physical therapy settings taught her to think about massage not as a luxury, but as a corrective tool. That foundation is what makes Sonja’s therapeutic massage different from other providers in Denver, CO. She doesn’t work from a script. She reads your body, adapts to what she finds, and builds each session around your specific biomechanical reality.
This intuitive quality doesn’t replace her clinical skills, it amplifies them. Sessions feel different. Longer-lasting benefits. Clients feel more whole.
